As a teenager, I found that my pictures drew unwanted attention. I dealt with it by slapping thick paint over my pictures so that they looked just as bad as everyone elses.
In the 1980's, as a young mother, at home with four small children, I found that I desperately needed to supplement the family income. So I decided to capitalise on my ability to draw by teaching myself to paint. I was told at the time that "nobody would want a picture of a flower." That attitude changed when my pictures started to sell as quickly as I could paint them. I went on to sell hundreds of paintings and exhibited in our local exhibitions here in Cardiff, South Wales.
In 1991, a whopping legal bill for my divorce made me think that there was an easier way to earn a living and my attitude then was, "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em." So I entered the legal profession and I have been working as a solicitor for the past eleven years. Together with my husband, we ran a criminal law firm for many years.
Now that I'm painting again, there's no turning back. I am now doing what I love doing and what I know I was always meant to do, having finally followed my heart. I'm a "driven woman," making up for the lost years who I didn't paint. I actually start to feel quite agitated if I'm deprived of my paint brushes for any length of time.
I am self taught, learning by trial and error. In the past, I have painted in a variety of mediums, favouring watercolour. However, oils are now by far my favourite medium because I love their instant vibrance and ease of application. I always have several unfinished paintings on the go at one time and I go from one painting to the next, as the mood takes me.
My paintings have always been very feminine, although my most recent work seems to be bucking that trend. I find that my paintings are constantly evolving.
I spend my spare time riding my adorable horse Harry, on the mountains near to where we live. He's definitely the "other man" in my life and he's featured in both my Animals with Attitude and Horses section. There's also a picture of him below.
